Embroidered Samplers
154 Louth - A Sampler dated 1790 incorporating an unusual design, meticulously embroidered by Mary Ashton at Louth. She used a fine almost transparent gauze fabric ~ and sewed her Sampler with silk threads in tiny cross stitch, satin stitch and stem stitch, including The Lords Prayer and three verses from St John, Ch 1, surrounded by a wide floral border. A note on the reverse of the frame reads "This Sampler belongs to Muriel Ley Bruce. It was left to me by our aunt Caroline Elizabeth Bruce who died 30/12/1943 aged 78. It was worked by our great great grandmother, who brought up Margaret Blackburn, Father's mother." £445
