10/10 Exeter & Torquay – 1851 – Short letter sent by ? I W Gray ? of Exeter, to Messrs Kitson, solrs, of Torquay, concerning ‘Harvey’ – acknowledging receipt of Cheque and Deeds. Complete ‘stampless’ letter on watermarked paper, with good clean strikes for Exeter & Torquay.   £10

67/82 Plymouth – 1825 – Letter noted ‘Late W Rawles affairs’ from Benj. H Lynes (Liskeard). The address panel has been cut out, so the addressee is not known. The letter refers to land sold to Mr Couche, a visit by Lynes to Mr Rawle & his family at Plymouth, to Mrs Rawle & her family here (Liskeard), and to 3 children Francis, Anne & Harriett, and sends compliments to Mr & Mrs Wm Ward. Written on 1 side of paper, signed by Benj. H Lynes – splits in 1 fold.   £6

162/28 Barnstaple – 1852 – 75 year Lease of plot of land by Town Council of Barnstaple to John Pulsford on which he is to erect a house. Restricts the uses, includes conditions re construction. Parchment signed / sealed by Pulsford, with signature of William Avery (Mayor) & Common Seal of Incorporation of Barnstaple (damaged). Gives details of names & acreage (according to survey of 1753) of 14 pieces of land. Tenants include Thomas Fairchild, James & Dennis Wiley. Names all parties to Release next day. 162/24 Bishops Tawton1836 – Lease for a year (the 1st part of Lease & Release for sale of property ) by Philip Peard (Calcutta, Bengal) to Samuel Bremridge (Barnstaple then Appledore) as assignee of Henry Cooke & John Herbert (both Bankrupts of Birchin Lane, London).  Includes names & acreage of 15 closes of land (said to have been included in settlement of 1805),current / former tenants – Dennis Wiley, Thomas Fairchild, William Hiern (Barnstaple), Paul Tucker, Richard Jones, Matthew Wake. Parchment signed / sealed by Thomas Goldsworthy as Attorney for Peard, witnessed on reverse by Christ r. James Stevens & Henry Stevens solr & clerk, Havant) [The precise nature of this transaction is unclear, but may relate to reassignment of lands on redemption of mortgage. 105/15 Buckland Dynham and Bickenbridge, Ilfracombe – 1848 – Covenant between George Symonds (Georgeham) – lands in Buckland – & Charles Symonds (Ilfracombe) – lands at Bickenbridge, to produce Title Deeds held by George  for all. Refers to agreement of 1800 when Richard Knill (Braunton) [wife Grace nee Peard] transferred all the lands to his son Richard.  Large sheet paper with embossed Duty stamps. 158/30 Hemyock – 1879 & later – Mortgage of Public House k/a The Denmark Inn, Taunton St James by James Moon (Hemyock) to William Henry Hewett (Norton Fitzwarren). Location of land by reference to road & adjoining property (sold by Edward Jeboult to George Cooksley.  Parchment sheet with decorative 1st 2 words signed & sealed by James Moon. On the reverse is a large red ink stain covering about 4% of the parchment, which has caused some discolouration to a small area of the text on the front of the document. The reverse of the document also includes the further agreements :- 1)An unexecuted Deed of 1880, an assignment of the mortgage by Hewett to himself, Charles Raymond Rodwell and Thomas Arthur Hussey (all Norton Fitzwarren) who had advanced the original mortgage jointly with Hewett.   2) Assignment 1883 by William Henry’s widow Frances Mary Hewett, Rodwell and Hussey to Elizabeth Manley (Wilton) signed & sealed by James Moon, Frances Mary Hewett, Charles Raymond Rodwell and Thomas Arthur Hussey.  3)1885 Redemption of Mortgage & reconveyance of property to Moon signed & sealed by E Manley.   £49

84/29 Ottery St Mary – 1762 – Marriage Settlement made by Mary Maynard the elder, on the marriage of her daughter Mary to James Sweet. Details lands, monies owed by Henry Marker (Wellington, Somerset) & Thomas Roach (Doddiston Lesliegh) also furniture & household goods which will be transferred to James if marriage takes place. Parchment – signed & sealed by Mary Maynard & James Sweet.  Rodent damage to 1 corner and edge when folded. (When unfolded, affects the whole of 1 vertical fold, with small loss of text).   £42

90/1 Ottery St Mary – 1815 – Bond given in support of Marriage Settlement by Robert Warren (O St M) to John Venn (Payhembury).  Sheet watermarked paper folded in 2. Page 1 is part pre-printed with manuscript details – refers to M S which John & his bother Clement Venn, Robert & son William Warren & daughter Gwen are party.  Signed / sealed by Robt Warren, witnessed by (Grace?) Warren & Thos Glanvill(e). Pages 2 & 3 confirm that M S conditions were fulfilled & bond discharged, includes some details of M S & Robert’s Will, dates of his death & marriage of John & Gwen. Signed by John Venn witnessed by Thos Glanvill(e). N B. The bottom of page 1/2 has been torn off & repaired with (archive?) tape.  £42

162/3 Parracombe – 1801 – Sale of house & lands at Parracombe – part k/a Barton Court Meadows by Richard Blackmore (Killington, Martinhoe) to William Dovell (Holworthy, Parracombe). The lands were inherited from his grandfather also called Richard Blackmore (Martinhoe). Peter Fosse (Ilfracombe) & John Lock (Lyn, Linton) were party to the agreement, possibly as trustees for Dovell. Richard’s daughter, Elizabeth Blackmore to be party to the Release. This document is a Lease for a year, being the first part of a Lease & Release which prior to the 1840’s were necessary to enable the transfer of Real estate. Parchment sheet signed / sealed by Richard Blackmore, witnessed on reverse by John Lovell(?) & Richard Tucker.  £50

130/38 Pinhoe – 1898 – Mortgage of properties – Fairview Terrace – by Thomas George Coles (Pinhoe) to Albert Edward Dunn & Charles Baker (both Solicitors in Exeter). Large sheet of parchment folded in 2 together with a location plan drawn on linen (sewn within the parchment to form a booklet) some dusting, creasing & slight damp staining.  The plan is noted in pencil with the names of subsequent purchasers of the various properties (including Stevenson, Bettenson, Anson, Hill, Short). Signed / sealed by Coles witnessed by A M Alford (Articled Clerk, Exeter). The reverse is noted with the dates of disposal & name of purchaser of some plots & houses – Eva Eliza Bowen Gisge,  Lydia Anna Wreford,  George Murch, Aaron Dufty,  Edward Evans,  Albert Anthony Coulman,  Mary Jessie Endacott, Ellen Sanders. In 1899, Elizabeth Coles was named as party to the agreements.  £44

This document is very badly damp damaged and most of the text is virtually illegible. It has a clear signature & seal of  Thomas George Coles & witness signature of A Martin Alford (Solicitor, Exeter).  £3

215/28 Plymouth – 1928 – Mortgage of Reversionary Interest in  Treliggan & Tretoil Farm, Lanivet, Cornwall  by Lieutenant Edward Dignum Treneer Michell (Plymouth) to  John Messer Bennetts (Truro).  Refers to Will of Edward’s father (died 1913) – Robert Treneer Michell  (Devoran) – Edward’s mother Lilias Home Treneer Michell.   Treliggan  Farm  (previously leased to John Henry Retallick now to William Arthur Bawden & Frank Melville Moyle Bawden). Paper booklet with typed text with manuscript insertions, on 8½ sides + cover, with large fold-out map (c 72cm x 50cm) based on 1881 Ordnance Survey map showing field numbers, woods, old mineshafts, etc. Signed by E.D. Treneer Michell, witnessed by H Naylor (solr, Truro)  Some staining to map & document mainly due to movement of red ink used to outline lands on map & underline parts of document.    Together with separate sheet of paper listing field numbers & acreages of lands. £28

Exeter) – 1896 – Easement for water drain granted by the Devon County Athletic Ground Company Ltd to the Urban District Council of St Thomas the Apostle, Devon.  Large sheet of parchment folded in 2 – written on 1½ sides. On the third page is a colour wash location plan showing the land adjacent to Regent Street, water course & stoneware culvert with sand tanks. Details interest held in lands by Mary’s late husband Thomas Chick under lease dated 1715, & annuities Wellington has agreed to pay to Chick family in exchange for surrender of property, on which notice had been served – to carry out repairs. Official Copy made in 1846 of Will which had been made in 1791. Names aunt Mary Stawell and cousin William Moggridge Stawell (South Molton). Refers to Will of father John Adams under which she inherited messuages (named) and lands in Lyng, North Petherton and Riston, Somerset. Jane Sully was servant to both Maria and her father and benefited under both Wills. It’s noted that at the date of her death, Maria was living in South Molton and that Letters of Administration were granted in 1811 to her cousin William Moggridge Stawell. Sheet of paper watermarked 1846, folded in 2 and written on 4 sides, signed by 3 Deputy Registrars.  £35
